Farewell Lumia, Hello Surface Phone?

#Lumia #SurfacePhoneFarewell Lumia, Hello Surface Phone? : Microsoft is reportedly saying farewell to its Microsoft Lumia line of devices, but that doesn’t mean it’s getting out of the smartphone game, according to a new report. Microsoft will discontinue its Lumia line of smartphones by year’s end, WinBeta reported.

As always, this is a citing from an anonymous source with knowledge of the company’s plans. This comes out just as Microsoft is revealed to have plans for an All-in-One device in the wings.

Right now, remaining Microsft Lumia devices include the 550, 650, 950, and 950 XL. But Redmond has made them scarce at Microsoft Stores and online, while discounts abound.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But its current mantra is ‘mobile-first’ while Windows 10 is designed to work across all form factors, including mobile devices.

Still, it’s hard to ignore the market realities. Android and iOS dominate the worldwide smartphone and tablet markets and Microsoft has only been able to keep its share in the single digits. We might just be in for a re-branding.

WinBeta points to tweets from Microsoft’s Laura Butler, who hinted that the company could launch a Surface Phone. In one message, Butler wrote that the Surface Phone is “not NOT confirmed.” In another, she mentioned Surface Phone with a “wink” emoji; both tweets have since been deleted.

There are reports that Microsoft will host a Surface-focused press event next month. We’ll have to see if a Surface Phone also makes an appearance, though reports of such a device have circulated for years. Source: pcmag
