#WindowsPhone #Lumia – Windows Phone still has one surprise MAJOR fanbase : Microsoft may be enduring some struggles with its Windows Phone platform, but it seems one group is extremely happy to keep using the service.
A report from CNET has found that the New York Police Department (NYPD) is equipping all of its officers with a Windows Phone, along with their gun and badge. The study found that the NYPD has been handing out Lumia 830 and Lumia 640 XL smartphones to its 36,000 officers, along with department-issued email addresses since 2015.
The NYPD reportedly chose the Windows Phone devices over iOS and Android competitors due to Microsoft’s expertise in security and remote working. Microsoft has also worked with the NYPD to develop a number of specialised apps to help its officers.
This includes a direct 911 line that goes to an officer rather than a dispatcher, which the department says has dropped the response time for crimes in progress by over 12 percent.
Also included in the suite of apps were a police records search, in-house messaging, a case management system and a media library for training videos and policy updates.
The report adds that the NYPD is looking to upgrade to devices running Windows 10 by next summer in order to take advantage of the improved work services in Microsoft’s newest software. Windows Phone devices currently make up around one per cent of the global smartphone market.
